Modern Groove Syndicate

Modern Groove Syndicate!

A funky quintet based out of Richmond, Virginia, the Modern Groove Syndicate has created a unique sound guaranteed to make your head spin, soul stir, and ass shake. Their genre defying sound is a veritable gumbo of funk, jazz, latin, soul, hip-hop, and whatever else they might have been listening to that day.

What began as a trio in the beginning of 1998, then a quartet by the fall of the same year, and finally a quintet in the summer of 2001, the Modern Groove Syndicate is primarily an instrumental group relying heavily on composition, improvisation, and their own unique brand of energy and individual talents to get their point across.

While the groups influences are all over the map, one can hear elements of P-Funk, John Cage, Brecker Brothers, the Crusaders, Jimmy Smith, and the Meters within their sound. Five musical powerhouses coming together to take the listener on a journey the likes of which he or she has never experienced before, that is the Modern Groove Syndicate.

The Modern Groove Syndicate has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with a wide variety of Bands. Some of them include - Cracker, The Tom Tom Club, The Samples, Dr. Didg, Agents of Good Roots, Ulu, Jimmies Chicken Shack, Eddie From Ohio, Zen Tricksters, Ike Willis & Project Object, Lake Trout, Schleigho, and Moon Boot Lover. MGS includes members of national recording acts such as Agents of Good Roots, Moterico, and Buzby.

  5. You guys are probably some of the most amazing musicians with an ungodly amount of groove! I’m spreading the word and covering some songs from you guys (plan to do Frying Eggs And Bacon with a big band in the summer, I’ll send a recording). Hopefully you keep giving us killer tunes for a long time to come, MGS stands out as a premier force of the funk! Killer!!!

    Hi Guys,

I’ve been a fan of your music since I first heard your music on XM radio. I’ve seen you all play several times at Cary Street Cafe. I think you guys play great!

I’ve been attending the Montreal Jazz Festival for several years I really think that the band would be a great addition to the line-up of concerts that the Jazz Festival puts on. I also think it would be great for the band to get the kind of international exposure that performing at the Festival would provide. Fifty thousand people a day attend the 10 day festival from all over the world. The exposure for the band would be enormous.

Here’s a link for you to contact the Festival people for you to perhaps get a spot in the 2009 festival line-up. The 2009 festival is going to be a big one because it’s the 30th anniversary of the festival. The festival happens every year starting in the third week of June. It may seem a little early for you folks to contact the festival but keep in mind that they start immediately planning the festival. I think it would also be good for the band to be there because it would open you up to jazz, in all forms, from all over the world and it would serve to broaden your musical horizons.

Good Luck! The link below is the festival’s email address for programming. Don’t worry about writing in English, people in Quebec are fluent in both languages.
